Holiday carts rolling for fun

An announcement by the SCC Community Association that there would be no golf cart parade this year was met with mixed reactions. Most seemed to understand the cautionary stance to keep residents safe.
But there was disappointment as well. Among those disappointed were Leonard and Janet Lewinski, who moved here a year ago in October from Wisconsin. Last year they were preoccupied with getting settled and enjoyed the parade but did not enter a cart. They did, however, look forward to participating in 2020 when the grandkids would be visiting.
2020 was an unprecedented year that brought a lot of stress and social isolation to the community. The Lewinskis viewed a resident-organized golf cart event as a chance for folks to use some pent-up energy to decorate their carts and socialize in a safe way outside.
Announcements on social media brought out 15 or so participants for the Dec. 19 event. They gathered in the parking lot of the former church at N. Pebble Beach and LaJolla on a bright Saturday morning for a route that would take them 3.6 miles. An additional 5-mile loop was planned for those who wanted to continue.
Leonard Lewinski led the procession with a manger scene atop his cart. He dressed as a wise man accompanied by his two granddaughters as angels and son-in-law as a shepherd. He said they hadn’t expected to generate anything big, just an opportunity to have some fun Florida-style.
