Relief is available for many forms of chronic pain

If you suffer from chronic aches and pains like many folks do, a couple of upcoming health-focused events could be your ticket to a brighter future.
South Bay Hospital has partnered with the Sun City Center Emergency Squad, Sun City Center Men’s Club and Sun Towers to present two Fall Health Symposiums from 12:15 to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Kings Point Veterans Theater and Oct. 29 at Sun City Center Community Hall.
The topics are all related to aches and pains, their causes and what can be done to address them.
“It’s hard to decipher all the health information out there these days, and there is so much misinformation on the internet,” said Dan Bender, South Bay Hospital CEO. “We want to be a credible source of (such) information for the community. Our goal is to create a healthier community.”
The subjects to be discussed during the symposiums represent “the majority of conditions coming through” South Bay’s doors,” he said.
On both event days, physical therapist Linda K. Eargle will discuss fall prevention, being more aware of your surroundings, maintaining your balance, improving posture and gait, properly managing medications, staying hydrated and more.
General surgeon Keyer Chavda, M.D., will talk about the mystery of gut pain, where it originates, its various causes and how it can be treated.
Anesthesiologist Srinivasan Saytha, a pain management doctor, will discuss how evidence-based medicine is moving away from narcotics and opioids, what causes pain and how to manage it.
And four orthopedists, two at each event, will talk about pain in the hips, knees and upper extremities, what causes it and treatment options, including surgery.
On Oct. 22, Dr. Robert Maddalon will focus on knee arthritis and Dr. Benjamin Lindbloom, shoulder replacements. At the Oct. 29 event, Dr. Anthony Infante will discuss hip pain and its signs, symptoms and treatment and Dr. Peter Lopez, upper extremity injuries.
“We did a survey following last year’s symposiums and made a list of topics people were interested in,” said SCC Emergency Squad Chief Mike Bardell. “The topics we’ll be presenting were high on that list and ones we felt we could get speakers for.”
Check-in is at 12:15 p.m., and a box lunch will be provided. There will be two Q & A sessions at each event.
Kings Point Veterans Theater is at 1900 Clubhouse Drive, and the Sun City Center Community Hall is at 1910 Pebble Beach Blvd. S.

South Bay Hospital is looking forward to further serving Sun City Center and surrounding communities by offering new tele services, doing further renovation and upgrading its ER in 2020.
It continues to host its quarterly town halls on various health topics, where experts are there to answer questions. The entire hospital board attends. The next one is at Community Hall on Dec. 17.
The hospital Sunday brunch menu has been refreshed, and the cost has been reduced to $5.
And its Marketing Director Shannon Mitchell hosts “Healthy at Any Age” on Sun Radio 96.3 FM at 11 a.m. Wednesdays.
