I didn’t see it coming. I figured August is late in the summer. So, vacations are over, right? That would be incorrect. Our volunteers are making summer plans like you wouldn’t believe. And all their plans sound awesome. I am jealous. However, we have suddenly become very short staffed.
As I’ve mentioned on many occasions, the chamber depends on our volunteers each and every day. And our current group of volunteers helps us out more than they know. When you walk into the chamber, you’ll notice we have four desks. One for me, one for Membership Specialist Kristy and two for the volunteers. We consider ourselves a staff of four. And some days, due to outside appointments, family obligations or trips out of state, our staff of four dwindles down to three or two. That’s where you could come in. We rely on that staff of four. Our days are structured around those four desks working together. If we are down one or two, it really makes a difference. While our volunteers get to take time off whenever they need it, we need backup players. So that is where you could fit in. If you feel you could help us out, here’s what we are looking for in a volunteer.
• Answering phones and dealing with walk-ins are the two biggest tasks. And along with those calls and walk-ins comes a lot of question answering. But we’ll provide you with the tools you need – lists and lists of numbers to resources around town. But a lot of those answers are just common sense.
• You are also part of a referral center. Residents call or come in looking for electricians, insurance agents, realtors. And you have their answers – in the chamber membership directory. You’re the key to referring our members to local residents.
• And if you have a skill set from a previous job or other volunteer position, we’ll put that to use, as well. For example, computer skills are not necessary but will be helpful.
Volunteer shifts are for three and a half hours: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m. And if you can work at some of our chamber events — even better. Volunteers who work our monthly chamber luncheons get a free lunch along with the opportunity to meet some of our members they’ve talked to on the phone.
If you think you have what it takes to become one of the team, please give Kristy a call at the chamber, 813-634-5111. She’ll give you the ins and outs of what we are all about. I hope you’ll consider becoming part of our amazing volunteer team at the chamber. We cannot do it without you…especially this summer!
