SCC: Community rallies to fight Alzheimer’s disease
A large crowd of enthusiastic people gathered at the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center Oct. 20 for the 12th annual South Shore Walk to End Alzheimer’s. After a brief introductory ceremony, where everyone involved in this year’s effort was thanked and told how their efforts would help make a difference, teams and individuals walked the 2-mile circular route from the church and back. Among the entourage were folks of all ages, including babies in strollers and seniors in wheelchairs. Even a few dogs joined the festivities.
Thus far, this year’s campaign raised $41,000, with about half of that turned in the day of the event. The total is still rising, said Sun City Center resident Connie Lesko, event organizer for the past 12 years. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 20 at www.alz.org.
“This is a real community event,” Lesko said. “Although we didn’t quite meet our goal, we are pleased with the participation and the money raised.”
