Dozens of volunteers from Home Depot stores in the region converged on the Riverview VFW building on Friday morning. Their mission? A four-hour major rehab of the aging facility. In addition to the volunteer labor, Home Depot provided a $24,500 grant to remake the home of the veteran’s organization.
“I can’t believe a corporation the size of Home Depot would care about us but they do,” said Ryan Ridenhour, Commander of Post 8108. “We have never seen a grant that large before.”
Home Depot volunteers and licensed contractors painted the walls, replaced doors and even toilets and other bathroom fixtures. They built a platform for, and added, a fire pit in the back. They replaced the flooring on the stage and attended to any number of small yet cumbersome details. One Home Depot volunteer even mowed the grass.
“Our roof will get fixed, doors, lights, the walls,” Ridenhour continued. “Things can get worn out over time, and this will bring joy to our members. They will be ecstatic. This is really a blessing.”
