On Tuesday, Feb. 2, Don Smith will turn 67. And, as in the past, he plans to celebrate by swimming 300 continuous lengths to raise funds for children who have Type 1 diabetes. Smith has been swimming for this cause  since 2002 and has raised approximately $165,000 for Diabetes Youth Services (DYS).

DYS is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Toledo, Ohio. It provides educational and supportive services for young people with diabetes, their families, schools and communities.

As a result of Smith’s fundraising efforts, a family’s  financial situation does not hinder any child from attending the DYS Diabetes Educational Camp. You can learn more about DYS and the educational camp by visiting its website at

Smith’s swim will take place at the Main Campus Pool in Sun City Center. All are welcome to attend and cheer him on.

If you would like to become more involved in this worthy cause, Smith is available to give a presentation to your group or organization and can be reached at 419-796-1275.

If you would like to make a contribution, make the check payable to Diabetes Youth Services and send it to Donald J. Smith,  P.O. Box 6158, Sun City Center, FL 33571-6158.

One hundred percent of the money raised goes directly to DYS and a tax receipt will be sent to each contributor. Over the years, pledges have varied from 10 cents to a dollar per lap and Smith has had donations ranging from $3 to $2,000. Any amount will be appreciated and put to  good use. Smith’s goal this year is to raise $35,000.
