On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Sun City Center will observe Veterans Day at the Community Association’s Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.
The ceremony is sponsored by the Sun City Center combined military veterans organizations in recognition of our many community veterans.
The program will start at 9 a.m.; however, it is suggested that all guests be seated by 8:45 a.m. Doors will open at 8 a.m. Coffee and cookies will be provided. It is free, and the public is invited.
The guest speaker will be retired Navy Rear Adm. Lawrence C. (Larry) Chambers. In the course of a 32-year career, he piloted military aircraft, commanded ships and held positions of responsibility on land. His military decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the China Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars.
After his retirement from the Navy, Chambers worked for Unisys Corp. and subsequently went on to a third career with a Swedish conglomerate, Kinnevik, where he worked on projects in various locations around the world, including Bosnia, Vietnam and Kazakhstan. He and his wife Sarah now live at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center.
The program includes a musical interlude presented by the Trinity Baptist Church Choir, directed by Rev. James Feist. Marine Corps veteran Edward Mahoney will be Grand Marshal and head the Procession. The Color Guard will be composed of JROTC Cadets from East Bay High School.
This ceremony is complemented by the efforts of the Sun City Center Patriots Club, which has, through its fundraising efforts, ensured that the flags will continue to fly along S.R. 674 during this special period of recognition to veterans and active military forces. The Patriots Club will be at the ceremony to collect funds for the special rehabilitation program at the James A. Haley VA Hospital and will also hand out U.S. stick flags to all attendees.
