The 5K run started out colorfully on a beautiful, breezy morning last Saturday.
The estimated 125 to 150 participants, both runners and walkers (along with a few canine walkers), released colorful bags of chalk dust into the air before the race began. A cloud of dust created a celebration effect for a very serious cause — it was the first annual Mary & Martha House Stepping Out Against Domestic Violence 5K. The proceeds of the run went to benefit the efforts of the Mary & Martha House, South Hillsborough’s only shelter for abused and imperiled women and their children. The event was held at E.G. Simmons County Park in Ruskin.
Organizers hope to double the attendance next year. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and is symbolized with a purple ribbon.
