Mary Bessignano, a resident of Belvedere Commons in Sun City Center, turned 104 years old Saturday, Sept. 13. The staff and residents at the senior living facility held a party in her honor last Friday, complete with balloons, birthday cake and entertainment by Mr. Music.
Mary was born in Logansport, Indiana, in 1910 and spent most of her life there. Back home she was very active in her church and also volunteered for many years with the Red Cross, in hospitals and nursing homes. It was her time spent at nursing homes that she favored above all. The one-on-one relationships she formed were seen as a blessing to her.
Mary has been at Belvedere Commons for five years. Although she has slowed down considerably, she enjoys the activities offered there, as well as reading, praying and watching Mass on television. “When you have faith, it gives you strength to carry on. God has blessed me in so many ways,” she said.
Mary’s son, Don Bessignano, was there to help his mother celebrate. She is the oldest resident at the facility.
