Renowned Ruskin-based artist Dolores Coe welcomed art patrons to the latest exhibit of her work, held at Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art in Sarasota. Several dozen people turned out for the Dec. 13 reception to hear Coe talk about her work.
“The paintings in the exhibition are mostly large-scale, oil-on-canvas of invented spaces populated with source imagery drawn from familiar sources I photograph around me” — including local parking lot carnivals in Ruskin, the annual one-ring Showman’s Benefit Circus and Hwy 41 concrete statuary outlets.
“The exhibition reception is one of the few opportunities to be present when a whole range of people first see the paintings. This one was an enjoyable mix of strangers interested in art, other artists, friends, students, collectors and curious guests. I really enjoy meeting and talking with people and hearing their thoughts and questions,” Coe says.
Coe is a former professor at Ringling College of Art and Design. She is also represented by the Clayton Galleries in Tampa.
Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art is located at 1288 N. Palm Ave. in Sarasota. Her exhibit runs through Dec. 28.
