View From the Road
It is Friday night as I write this column, the eve of the 40 year Class Reunion of the Class of 1968, East Bay High School.
I sit here wondering about all the fellow classmates that I will see after all these years.
Some I see from time to time around the community, but I look forward to the many that I don’t. The glimpses of the past that we will all see in each other’s faces will be the thing that I enjoy the most.
I am certain that flashes of the past that have laid dormant for so many of us will appear Saturday night. That is what we all hope for.
I would like to graduate Saturday night into a new chapter in my life. Looking back in time will be a good time to remember and reflect on those dreams that dwelled in our minds, and strive to move forward to the next forty years. I am looking to the future with as much enthusiasm as I did on that hot, humid day in Wimauma, back in 1968.
Of course there will not be the pomp and circumstance that was celebrated on that day, but I believe thoughts of those times will fill the minds of my fellow classmates.
Amazing changes have certainly taken place for all of us, but I believe there will still be remnants of the past still showing in our eyes. Envisioning the young faces of the past looking back at me from my late fifties friends will be a pleasant experience. The anticipation may be greater than the actual event. I recognize that, and I am enjoying this moment. Tomorrow night I will get a chance to live the experience.
As I get older, I realize the importance of the past. As a young man, I was confused by the power that the past held over my parents and other adult people I knew, I now understand.
As I travel the road of life, my “View From The Road” becomes more clear and focused.
