Mixed Emotions

By the time this article appears in the paper Father’s Day will have passed. I look forward to this day with mixed emotions. My father passed on some time ago, but I would give anything to spend a Sunday afternoon with him once again.

I look back and try to remember what a typical Father’s Day was like when he was still alive.

I am disappointed in myself for not making at least one Father’s Day one that I would not forget. However, if I were to ask my Dad, he probably had many that were special to him. I hope so anyway. He deserved many special days.

For most of his life he made every day special for each of his children. His every effort was focused on making us all happy and content. Many times he neglected his own desires to ensure that we were all taken care of. But, in fact, isn’t that a Dad’s job? Well, he took his job seriously.

Like most Dads he worked hard each day. When work was over, he came home and started all over again. With six children, a dad’s time must be managed well. He managed to work, farm and take time to do little things for us.

We grew to expect this, thinking all dads were like him. We were blessed children and didn’t even know it until it was too late. I grow older wondering if he truly understood how much I appreciated him. If I could be sure, that would be my greatest dream fulfilled.

A card with a sweet verse is nice, but the warmth of a HUG and the sound of a son’s voice expressing this feeling is what I wish to offer him this Father’s Day. If you were listening closely this past Sunday, you may have heard me announce it into the heavens. I am sure he heard it. I know this because he still dwells within my heart.

My Dad, like most of yours, also knows just how we feel. Tell them over and over again. Believe me, you will feel better for it.

I can thank my Dad for the ability he gave to me, to have a quality “View From The Road” as I travel down the highways of life.
