A Smile

It seems that some people get better service than others, and people go out of their way to serve them. What makes them so special? I believe it is because those special people have learned the importance of a smile. A smile is the most powerful magnet known to man to attract others to us. And since it is almost always reflected back to us from the face of those we give it to, it brings sunshine into our days. Here is a little poem about a smile and its importance that I think you might enjoy.

Smile
She smiled at a sorrowful stranger. The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend, and wrote him a thank you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the thank you, that he left a large tip after lunch.
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip, bet the whole thing on a hunch.

The next day she picked up her winnings, and gave part to a man on the street.
The man on the street was grateful; for two days he’d had nothing to eat.
After he finished his dinner, he left for his small dingy room.
He didn’t know at that moment that he might be facing his doom.
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy and took him home to get warm.
The puppy was very grateful to be out of the storm.
That night the house caught on fire. The puppy barked the alarm.
He barked till he woke the whole household and saved everybody from harm.
A number of lives have been touched by a gift that seemed heaven sent.
All this because of a simple smile that hadn’t cost a cent.

How are you using your smile, or are you using it at all? One of my favorite stories is about the man who lost all of his money in the stock market and was sitting in his office at the top of a very high building. He was despondent and decided to jump out the window and end his life. As he looked down to the street, he noted that there were many people walking by and reasoned that if he jumped, he may hurt someone as he fell to the street. He decided that since they were innocent of any wrongdoing, he would not jump but rather walk down to the East River and commit suicide by drowning. While going down on the elevator, he began wondering if all really was lost and if he really was as alone as he felt. Finally, he decided if just one person would smile at him as he walked to the river, he would not end his life. Now ask yourself: Am I the person who would have saved his life by sharing one of my smiles?
Yes, I know this is just a story, but how many people do you pass everyday that need your smile as much as the fellow walking toward the river? You have an unlimited supply of smiles and the beautiful thing about sharing them is that your life is enriched by those who return a smile for yours. It is true that one candle can’t chase away the darkness, but recently I watched a gathering in which one candle was lit and from it the entire crowd lit theirs, turning the night into a blaze of light. Let your smile be the one to start the blaze and you will never walk in darkness.
