ADDING SPARKLE TO YOUR LIFE (Part 2)

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as having said, “I should have no objection to go over the same life from its beginning to the end, requesting only the advantage authors have, of correcting in a second edition the faults of the first.” Wouldn’t it be great to be in a position to make changes from prior knowledge? It might be, but I suspect that many of us would make the same mistakes over again because I see people not using the knowledge they already have to direct their current lives. I see people living in a perpetual state of gloom even though they could bring their lives into the sunshine with just a little effort. In my last column I shared some ideas gleaned from others about adding brightness and sparkle to our lives. Keep in mind that color can be both a pigment and a flamboyant or unusual way of living. Here are some additional answers from friends around the world to my question: How do you add color to your life and keep it interesting?

I spent some time scanning and digitizing a number of colorful pictures to use as “wallpaper” on my computer. My intention is to have it look colorful and new on a weekly basis and add a bit more “noise” to the environment that needs to be audibly quiet. (By the way, this friend is a librarian from England, hence the reference to the quiet environment.)

I am always taking a class on something. In fact, it has become a joke with my family and coworkers, but privately several of them have said how much they envy my ability to try new things and to have adventures that are out of the mainstream. Last year when I signed up for a Yoga class, two of my coworkers asked if they could come to. We all had fun and it added some color to their lives.

I have found four friends that would love to travel. None of us has the disposable income to do any real traveling right now, but we each take a destination and learn all we can about it. Every month we get together and share what we have learned about our “assigned” destination. Through the eyes and research of my friends, I am truly a world traveler and that travel has added a rainbow of color to my life.

Robert Burns said, “Some men see the way things are and say ‘why?’ I see things as they could be and say ‘Why not?’” Well, I feel the same way. I put color in my life by looking for the why nots and challenging others to do the same. Every time I catch myself saying, “I can’t,” I ask myself “Why not?” My views are rarely mainstream, but I do get things changed and add a lot of color to the lives of people around me.
Well, there you have them — some more ideas on how to add color to your life. Picture the flowing brook and the sparkle it has. Now, picture the mud puddle. Which best epitomizes your life? If you are leading your life as a mud puddle, do not be surprised to find few people wish to share it with you, especially if they have friends that sparkle like the brook. The best way to add color to your life is to never allow yourself to go stale. Colorful people stay active both physically and mentally. The choice is always up to you.

Hodges Hosts Television
Program
Bill Hodges also hosts an interview-format television program, “Spotlight On Tampa Bay.” It airs Mondays at 8 p.m., Bright House cable channel 950 and Verizon cable channel 30. His guest for September 1 will be Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe. Sharpe is an excellent example of what a commissioner should be, and his comments on county government should be very enlightening. This program will be repeated on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:30 p.m. on Bright House channel 949.

Bright House subscribers who cannot get the higher channels can get—at no installation fee and a monthly $1 fee—a box to allow access to the upper level government and educational channels. Call Bright House for details on the rental. If you are unhappy about having to pay extra to see your government in action, complain to your state representatives and the Hillsborough BOCC which have either caused this situation or been complicit in allowing it to continue.
