Art May
The Sun City Center dancing community experienced a deep loss when Art May, 65, lost his battle with aggressive lung cancer on July 28. A memorial is scheduled for August 6, 10:30 a.m., in the Atrium (Florida Room) on the Main Campus of the SCC Community Association, 1009 North Pebble Beach Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting contributions to LifePath Hospice (Ruskin FL).
Art, a native of Dayton, Ohio, pursued a career in home sales and remodeling in the ‘60s before he followed his passion for the outdoors and established a fishing business in Florida. In 1996 he returned to Dayton and joined his childhood sweetheart, Bernice DuBro, as partner in the DuBro Dance Studio, a business she had grown into the largest studio in Dayton in the first three decades of her 40-year dance career.
They were married in 1999 and relocated to Florida in 2006, a move that gave Art the opportunity to pursue his love of fishing, and he could be seen regularly at the side of SCC’s numerous lakes and ponds. He also formed a new business, The Crab Bait Company, which made a unique product more available to the crab fishing industry.
With their dance expertise, Art and Bernice quickly became immersed into the dance community and held classes sponsored by the Academy of Ballroom Dance. They also taught in Riverview (Summerfield) and Wimauma (Valencia Lakes) and used their musical expertise to serve as DJs at local dances. The dance classes will continue with Bernice as instructor.
In addition to Bernice, Art is survived by his mother Stella May (Dayton); children Kelly Wolfe (Mason OH) and Mike May (Buffalo NY); stepson Jeff DuBro (Falls Church VA);and seven grandchildren Kelsey, Hailey and Brady Wolfe, Megan and Ryan May, Jackson and Anna DuBro. He also has three sisters Lynn Sisemore (California), Eileen Lee and Ginny Flint (Dayton); and two brothers Don May and Ken May (Dayton).
The family is also planning a memorial in Dayton on August 17. For information on the August 6 SCC memorial, call Bill and Phyllis Hodges at 633-1523.
