Frances E. Godfrey
Frances E. Godfrey, 94, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2008 in Phoenix, AZ.
Born in Webster, NY, Frances moved to Lockport, NY as an adolescent and resided there until her husband’s retirement in 1975. She met her future husband, John Godfrey, while in high school and they married in 1935 after his graduation from Canisius College. The couple had two children, Robert and Julie. Throughout their marriage Frances was a homemaker while John worked for Harrison Radiator, GMC, rising to the position of Assistant Chief Engineer. She stayed active with bridge clubs, garden clubs, the Rebeccas, the Eastern Star, golf, photography and involvement in community service organizations such as the Salvation Army Board. The couple also traveled extensively throughout the Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, the British Isles, Panama and Columbia. They were also actively involved in foreign exchange student programs, hosting a number of students from South and Central America. In 1975 they moved to Sun City Center, FL enjoying a rich and full life of retirement until John’s death in 1987. Frances then decided to remain in Florida to be near her daughter and her two granddaughters who lived in Tampa, FL. The death of her daughter three years ago and her own declining health necessitated a move earlier this year to be near her son and his family in Arizona. She spent the last few weeks of her life surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frances is consistently described by anyone who knew her as simply “a very nice lady”. She liked people, was genuinely interested in them, and was always available to listen and help. She had no vices and many virtues. She was widely loved and will be sorely missed. Frances was preceded in death by her parents George and Emma Engert, a brother Melvin Engert and his wife Ellen, a sister Olive Kugler and her husband John and her daughter Julie Williams.
She is survived by a son Robert and his wife Rosemarie of Phoenix, AZ and Hamburg, NJ, grandsons Scott (Bonnie) of Jefferson, NJ and Mark (Mastaneh) of Phoenix, granddaugter Robin Coats (John) of Tucson AZ, Bethany Williams of Phoenix and Amanda Williams who is serving as an officer in the US Army, and six great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
A memorial service was held in Phoenix on June 28th. Services are also planned for July in Lockport, NY and Sun City Center, FL. No donations please. Arrangements were by Valley of the Sun Mortuary, Chandler, AZ.
