In Your Words
Steve Irwin, known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, died Monday resulting from an encounter with a stingray off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
According to news reports, Irwin swam too close to a stingray during filming for a new documentary. The stingray's barb reportedly pierced his chest and entered his heart. He was pronounced dead after emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene.
Over the past several years, Irwin became one of the most recognized television personalities in the U.S. as his programs aired numerous times each day on the Animal Planet cable channel and the Discovery Network.
Known for his close encounters with crocodiles, venomous snakes and other dangerous animals, he was equally well known as a passionate conservationist. He was also known for his use of the exclamation, "Crikey!"
In addition to his television programs, Irwin operated the Australia Zoo. He was also beginning work on a new children's television series with his daughter, Bindi.
He is survived by his American-born wife Terri, eight-year-old Bindi and three-year-old son, Bob.

I will never forget the exerberance, outgoing nature, positive attitude that could not be contained in simple language.
Steve was a person who will always be missed, who has touched more lives than he could ever imagine. The world is a little darker without his presence. Thanks you Steve, for you will always be a part of my life.

Steve Irwin was I wonderful man. We've got to see his happy moments and sad moments. I’m so sad for the death of Steve! I’ve been a huge fan of his show since I was 7 years old and I’m 14 now. He was my hero. And I also feel so sad for Steve's family. When I heard the news about Steve's death I cried all day long! I couldn’t stop, and I’m trying not to cry now. But I will miss him just like millions of people will. I loved him and still do. We will truly miss him. God bless Terri, Bindi, and Bob. R.I.P Steve Irwin

what a great loss to our world wide community. i feel for his family and friends. he has become a wonderful part of our lives. i know if there is a heaven he is doing what he loves to do, and sharing with all his new family.
note: on the first comment. this person "james" is a person of just self interest that they cannot see past their narrow life view. i hope that steve irwin's family will not be upset with this one persons view.
good luck steve..it's been a pleasure knowing you.

This is to his beautiful family, I am sorry to hear of your loss of a wonderful "family man" in all his shows, he spoke greatly of his wife and children. He was a wonderful example of guidence and descretion when it came to handling animals of all sorts. But when it came to his family he handled you with much care and love. We are all very greived.

My oldest daughter grew up with him and I'm sure my youngest daughter would have loved his shows. My parents made a trip to Austrailia and knew my oldest would be excited to learn that they had been to "The Crocodile Hunter's" Zoo. We were watching Jeff Corwin on Animal Planet when I read the news on the internet. It's just not right!
My condolences to his family.

What a shame about Steve. My oldest son told me the sad news when it broke out on the Internet and now it's all over the radio. Who could have guessed that something like this would happen. Our hearts go out to his wife and children. We already have two "Crocodile Hunter" videos and the movie on DVD to remember him by. Love that Aussie accent of his. We'll miss him very much.

He was a true hero for animals and it is a great loss for the world. Especially his poor family and the children that now have to grow up without him. He died doing what he loved, but still... it's too heartbreaking to even comprehend. He was a great man with a big heart that loved his family, loved animals and had a great sense of respect for all living things. He will be missed.

I appreciate his genuine zeal for life, love for his family, and his love of animals. He always seemed to tempt fate on camera and sometimes we watched because we figured he was bound to get bit! He was more entertaining than most celebrities just by being himself and messing with animals. More entertaining than a thousand Paris Hiltons or Justin Timberlakes and all the politicians in the world. It's tragic that he was killed and in such a freak accident with a frightened animal. God be with his loved ones in their time of grief.

Steve Irwin will be deeply missed, not only was he a wonderful advocate for animal conservation, he brought such joy and exhuberance to all he did that he made even the most jaded cynic smile. If you weren't watching him with the Oh, my God what is he doing factor you just weren't watching him right. He was terrfic, universal and comitted to this planets wildlife as was his wife Terri. I hope his life and death will continue to highlight the importance of wildlife conservation. my condolences to all.
