Pet Grooming Starts at Home is written by Norma Gordon, owner of Cruisin’ K9 Cuts. ­Grooming your pets should not be left completely for the groomer. You should be taking part in your pet’s daily grooming. Depending on the type of coat your dog has would determine how often they should be combed or brushed.
Dogs with short hair could get away with once a week, but those with longer hair should be done every day. It not only keeps the mats out, but it is good for their coat and skin. This will also give you the chance to see if there are any problems, like lumps, warts, ticks, fleas, etc.
While you are watching TV and your best friend is lying next to you, is a good time to rub or play with their feet and ears. This will get them used to the touching, so it is easier for the groomer to cut the nails and get the hair out of their ears. Grooming should not be a traumatic experience for your dog and what you do at home will help with that process.
How about a bath?  Do you bathe your dog between grooming? You should. If you didn’t take a bath for four weeks or more, just think how bad you would itch, let alone smell. Your dog gets all kinds of things in their coat and it travels down to the skin. If you wait too long to wash it off, it could cause irritation and eventually allergies.
Remember...your dog depends on you for everything, please don’t let them down.
