Progress Energy Requests Rate Reduction

Senate President Pro-Tempore Mike Fasano announces that Progress Energy has stated its intention to request that the Florida Public Service Commission reduce customer’s 2009 bills by $15.08 per month per 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The price change reflects a revision in the fuel forecast as well as a deferral of a portion of the advance cost recovery for the nuclear plant to be constructed in Levy County. Progress Energy is requesting that the rate change become effective on the April billings of its customers.
“The customers have won a small victory with this announcement by Progress Energy,” Senator Fasano states. “I will be asking the Florida Public Service Commission to take action immediately on the request so that customers may be able to see relief on their March bills. I appreciate Progress Energy’s willingness to listen to the concerns of its customers, especially in these tight economic times. It has long been time for the little guy and gal to score a win. While this is but a small step forward, the greater challenge will continue as we work to slow or halt all future advance cost recovery rate increases tied to the nuclear power plant construction.”
The reduction will impact all Progress Energy customers throughout the state.
