Girls’ Flag Football Loses in First Round
The Girls’ Flag Football season ended Saturday in a 27-12 defeat by Plant City in the first round of FHSAA playoffs. The game was much closer than the score would indicate, but mistakes were costly. Statistically, the game was even with East Bay having the edge in 19 of 28 categories, but not the one that counts -- the final score.
Plant City played a solid game, capitalizing on the Indians’ mistakes. East Bay had three drives stall inside the Raider 1, 11 and 15 yard lines. Defensively, the team held the Raider QB, Techonqueyha Shaw, to under 100 yards rushing -- the first time this season any team has done that. Shaw is a tremendous athlete who has led the Raiders to a district championship and a 12-0 record. In the 2nd quarter Shaw scored for the Raiders after Plant City recovered a fumble and ran it 46 yards to the East Bay 4-yard line. Twice, East Bay blew its man-to-man (or girl-to-girl) coverage and twice Shaw found the open receiver. The Raiders next score came on another 1-yard run by Shaw, set up after 35 yard pass. After an East Bay punt in the 3rd quarter, Shaw marched down the field scoring with another 1-yard run. On the next play East Bay was intercepted. Shaw then threw to wide open Articia Bennett for a 37 yard TD.
With just over 8 minutes remaining, things finally looked up for the Indians. Dasia Daniels led the team on a 4-play, 66-yard drive, scoring on a 27-yard run. On the next play East Bay’s Julie Rolfe intercepted Shaw, but the Indians’ drive stalled at the Plant City 11 yard line. Four plays later Shaw threw her third INT as Delaney Poli stepped in front of the pass for the Indians. Four plays later Daniels found Janielle Rodriguez for a 20-yard TD pass. With just over two minutes left in the game and no time outs remaining, the Raiders simply ran out the clock. The following Tuesday Plant City defeated Freedom High School, 27-26 in triple overtime, and advanced to the state quarter-finals.
Overall, it has been a successful year for the Indians who are District Champions and posted a first winning season at 8-4. Last year the team finished 5-6 and district runner-up. This year 44 individual or team records were tied or broken. Nine different players scored on offense, led by freshman Dasia Daniels. Daniels accounted for 32 of the team’s 35 touchdowns, running for 1006 yards and 17 TDs while passing for 1137 and 12 TDs. She also caught 9 receptions for 128 yards and 3 TDs. Yet, she was an unselfish team player, tossing 5 TDs to five different players in a 32-12 district semi-final win over Newsome High School. Only two starters are graduating, so the future looks bright for East Bay.
