South Bay Hospital Purchases New Technology for Cancer Patients
South Bay Hospital has purchased a new Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) unit. This technology can be used to gather information about rectal and anal polyps and tumors.
The TRUS uses sound waves to create 360º images of the anal canal and rectum. These images help a doctor determine the depth of a tumor and lets the doctor know if a tumor has spread into the wall of the rectum and adjacent lymph nodes. This is all vital information for the doctor prior to surgery and treatment.
“At South Bay Hospital, we are committed to high quality patient care,” says hospital CEO Steve Daugherty. “The Transrectal Ultrasound is another tool to help our patients in the fight against cancer.”
The TRUS can also be used to view abnormalities in the rectum, evaluate fecal incontinence symptoms, test for intact anal sphincter, and evaluation of anal or rectal abscesses and fistulas.
South Bay Hospital and HCA West Florida have partnered with the American Cancer Society in the fight against colon cancer.
For more information about the Transrectal Ultrasound and the Get Tested campaign, call Melissa Morgan at (813) 634-0496.
