Medical Staff Announces Scholarship Recipients

Recently, Medical Staff Scholarship Chair Dr. Nancy Landfish with Chief of Staff William Davison, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lester Martinez-Lopez, and CEO Mike Fencel congratulated some of the recipients of the $1,000 Doctor’s Scholarship at Brandon Regional Hospital. The checks were received by the students in June of this year.
Dr. Landfish presented each with a certificate of acknowledgement congratulating each of them for completing the application and essay process without any spelling errors. The high school scholarship recipients included seven from area high schools and two from the hospital staff.
Dr. Davison explained that each of the physicians on the medical staff at Brandon Regional Hospital pays annual dues that supplement the scholarships. He credited Dr. Landfish for overseeing the process and selecting such worthy students.
Mike Fencel had each student share their intended school and major. The schools ranged from Hillsborough Community College to University of South Florida and from Florida Southern College to Dartmouth. Their majors are equally diverse from pre-med to culinary arts, and accounting to drama.
When some of the students mentioned that they intend to graduate in two years, Dr. Martinez encouraged them to enjoy the journey.  In addition to their certificates, the students received some hospital mementos to remind them that the community supports their efforts.
Brandon Regional Hospital is a 367-bed acute care facility with Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and JCAHO Primary Stroke Center certification. Major services include the Heart & Vascular Center, Spine Care Center of West Florida, and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care.

Introducing Adogable, LLC. Pet Services

Laura Rubin moved from Long Island, NY to Florida in 2001. All of her life her family had cats and dogs, . “Caring for all of our family pets taught me about responsibility and as an adult this has turned into a lifelong love for animals,” said Rubin. When she finished college and got her own apartment it seemed like something was missing, a canine companion. She went to the North Shore Animal League to “just look” and ended up falling in love with Slick, a jet black puppy and the first dog of her own. She had him for fifteen and a half years, training him by trial and error using her own techniques.

She moved to Riverview in 2003 where everyone on her block had dogs and before long Rubin started pet sitting until the many families in the neighborhood referred to her as the dog nanny. When she was ready to adopt another dog she went to the event held at MOSI, “No Dog Left Homeless,” where all of the Tampa rescue groups including C.A.R.E. attended. She left with a black and white shepherd mix with big goofy ears she named Radar. He had been neglected and behaved badly. Rubin used her training techniques that she perfected with her first dog Slick to get Radar under control in six months.
She took him to Dr. Ott’s Off Leash Dog Park in Ruskin where many people commented on how nice he looked. People asked who groomed and trained him. The seed was planted, “I thought why not make a career working with animals?” said Rubin. Adogable, LLC. Pet Services was born.
