–The scene was hard to miss for anyone driving down Apollo Beach Blvd. last weekend - in amongst the sailboats stored on the grounds of the Tampa Sailing Squadron in Apollo Beach were dozens of tents.  They were there as housing for the 19th annual Tampa Bay Sea Scout Regatta, an event which drew approximately 150 young people and 100 adults from across Florida and Georgia.

The regatta included instruction, training, racing and hands-on experience on sailboats both large and small.  For many young people coming from inland locations, it was their first time on big water in big sailboats.  Also during the weekend was a “Pirate’s Feast” in which all of the kids appeared in uniform.

The Sea Scouts is a coed outdoor program designed to promote better citizenship and to improve boating skills and knowledge through instruction and hands-on experience.  It operates under the umbrella of the Boy Scouts of America.  It is open to all youth age 14 to 20.

Ship-185 meets twice monthly at TSS in Apollo Beach.  The club is also planning an upcoming sail from Tampa Bay to the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas.  For information, call St. Amour at (813) 967-7718
