Coastal Cleanup Junkies Wanted
By
Karey Burek
The 16th annual Florida Coastal Cleanup will be coming to a
shoreline near you on Sept. 20! Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful (KHCB) is coordinating the
event and will have 16 sites where the public can come and volunteer to pick up
trash. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the cleanup is from 8:30 to noon. Last year there were more than 2,000 participants and they
picked up 70,500 pounds of trash countrywide. KHBC concluded that the amount of
garbage was the equivalent of 30 male adult African elephants. Last year, volunteers from around the world participated in
the coastal cleanup and found 259 animals that were entangled in debris. That
was up from 125 the previous year. What accounted for most of these incidents?
Fishing line and nets were to blame for 65 percent of these incidents. If you would like to participate in this years cleanup, call
(813) 960-5121. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided to volunteers!
