Everyone loves a parade!

Everyone loves a parade! I know I do. I used to be in a krewe. That’s just a fancy name for a group that dresses up in costumes and rides around on a float in a parade throwing beads and trying not to take anyone’s head off with your bad aim. Loved it. But after I hung up my wench costume (yes, I said “wench”), I still liked going to all the parades in downtown Tampa and Ybor City. My husband belongs to one of the largest area krewes — The Rough Riders — so I do get some extra-special beads thrown to me on parade day.

But wouldn’t it be more fun not to have to travel to watch a parade live and in person? Well, you’re in luck. We’ve got a parade right here in our own back yard! The Sun City Center Community Association’s (CA) 2018 Happy Holidays Golf Cart Parade is coming to town Saturday, Dec. 8, starting at 10 a.m. rain or shine. Obviously, we’re all voting for shine.

Residents of Sun City Center, Kings Point and Freedom Plaza are encouraged to participate. You just need to do two things: Register, then decorate. Well, you do have to show up for the parade too. You can pick up your registration forms at the CA or at the chamber. And it’s free.

Let your imaginations run wild, and try to win a prize for your golf cart decorating skills. The theme this year is Christmas. I’m thinking a lot of bows, trees and Santas. Your registration form must be turned in to the CA by Dec. 4. Carts must be at the CA parking lot on North Pebble Beach Blvd. by 9 a.m. for line-up and judging. And remember, no walking outside the cart … you gotta cram your entire crew inside to be legal.

I have a question for chamber member businesses: Why aren’t you in the parade? There is a category for best decorated business golf cart. All your customers are either going to be in the parade or watching. It just makes sense that you are there with them. Or, if you’d rather, donate a gift basket and be part of the over $1,000 in prizes being given out. Let me know if that’s your thing, and we can pick up your parade prize.

Finally, for you spectators. You need to cheer us on. According to the CA’s Dave Birkett, here is the route you need to stake out: The parade starts at the Central Campus on North Pebble Beach Blvd. Then take La Jolla Ave. to El Rancho to Ojai and finally to Cherry Hills Drive. The parade ends at the CA bandstand where the awards will be given out. Refreshments will be provided after the parade is over.

I said cheer “us” on. Yep. The chamber is in the parade. Dave Birkett was nice enough to offer us his spare cart. But he has some rules. No power tools, paint or duct tape. So now Leslie and I are at a loss on what we should do with our loaner. Give me a call with any ideas. We are so excited to be part of the parade — but we need to look awesome or at the very least festive.

Any questions, check out the CA’s website,
