Dr. Fabian A. Ramos recipient of Drug Free Manatee’s 2018 Champion of Prevention Healthcare award
Dr. Fabian A. Ramos, founder of The Ramos Center for Interventional and Functional Pain Medicine, was the recipient of the 2018 Champion of Prevention Healthcare award by Drug Free Manatee during the 16th annual Red Ribbon Breakfast, held recently. Ramos was recognized for his extraordinary impact in preventing and reducing substance abuse in our community, while promoting health and wellness across the lifespan.
Red Ribbon is the oldest prevention campaign in the country. Today, it serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to make drug prevention a priority. Drug Free Manatee celebrates National Red Ribbon Campaign by hosting an annual breakfast honoring Champions of Prevention. Champions are nominated by community members and represent the following sectors: Education, business, government, faith-based, civic, media, healthcare, SAMH Treatment, law enforcement, parents and youth serving youth.
Ramos is recognized in the healthcare category for his willingness to share his knowledge and insight with local area physicians, pharmacists and the community regarding HB 21, Florida’s new law on controlled substance prescribing. Additionally, as an interventional and functional pain physician, his focus on alternative strategies for his patients to address their chronic pain and his conservative view of pharmaceuticals is a factor in the reduction of opioid overdoses in Manatee County. Ramos’ expertise and leadership has helped many local physician practices to emulate his steadfast controlled substance agreement, to gain the same patient compliance as the Ramos Center for Interventional & Functional Pain Medicine.
Ramos is committed to creating a safer and healthier environment for Manatee County residents. “Due to the education we have offered to the community, our practice has seen an 80 percent decrease in patients requesting opioids. Eight out of 10 new patients coming into our practice have never been written a prescription for opioids and are now requesting non-opioid interventions,”said Ramos. Manatee Memorial Hospital CEO Kevin DiLallo shared that his ER is down 66 percent in prescribing opioids to patients and Sheriff Rick Wells confirmed that Manatee County overdoses are down by an astounding 84 percent. Through the efforts of all the 2018 Champions of Prevention nominees, Manatee County is now known as the “Epicenter of Recovery.” Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.
