Food for the mind and the body
By MITCH TRAPHAGEN
The colorful bus that had parked directly in front of the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin on Saturday had a name: Milo the Bus. Milo stands for Mobile Interactive Literacy Opportunity, an initiative by the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, WEDU radio, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and the Junior League of Tampa. Milo brought a friend along, Curious George, and together they were providing books for children to take home, allowing them to build their own libraries and to encourage lifetime reading among children and their parents.
Across the parking lot from Milo, Feeding Tampa Bay rolled out pallets of food and a portable assembly line to provide boxed meals to families and individuals in need. According to Clarissa Rain of Feeding Tampa Bay, volunteers were expected to provide 300 to 400 meals at the library that day. Overall, Feeding Tampa Bay, along with partner organizations, has provided meals for 700,000 people in the greater metro area.
