Monday is the day to remember those men and women who gave their last full measure of devotion to this nation and to all of us. Memorial Day ceremonies will be held around the area, including the annual ceremony at the recently renamed Veterans Theater in Kings Point.
Although there are numerous possible origins, the holiday was first thought to be officially observed on May 30, 1868, as flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1971, Congress declared the day a national holiday to remember those who gave their lives defending our freedom.
