Shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol received a report of a body along northbound I-75 near near mile marker 240, just north of Sun City Center (near the Ruskin / Sun City Center interchange).
Troopers arrived moments later and found a deceased person; an apparent victim of a hit-and-run crash.
As of Monday afternoon, from evidence collected at the scene, the FHP is searching for a black Ford F-150, F-250 or Expedition-type vehicle, possibly with a flat tire and damage to the right front side of the vehicle.
FHP investigators determined that the fatal crash occurred during the overnight hours. The victim was described as a 38-year-old male. Investigators said that he was a pedestrian and was likely struck in or near the northbound outside lane of the freeway. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. The impact propelled the victim to the shoulder of the freeway where he was later discovered by a passing motorist.
The FHP is asking that anyone with information on this active investigation call 813-631-4020 or contact Crime Stoppers at 800-873-8477 (TIPS) or via www.crimestopperstb.com.
