Don’t write off hurricane season just because we’ve made it through July and most of August without a named storm affecting South County.
Of all the major hurricanes to hit Florida during its weather-recording history, most have occurred in September. Which is precisely why JSA Medical Group is hosting its third annual Hurricane Preparedness Mini Expo next Thursday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at its office, 787 Cortaro Drive in Sun City Center. Hosting a late-August expo brings the thought of a major storm back to the forefront of residents’ minds, allowing them to be prepared if a storm threatens the Tampa Bay area.
Seating is limited for this event, and reservations are required. Call Rosie Korfant at 813-419-5020 to reserve your seat.
Several presentations will be made, with a Q&A period following each session:
First up will be the team from JSA Medical with “Emergency Medical Supplies: What and How to Pack.”
Next is the keynote speaker, Diane Kacmarik, Bay News 9 meteorologist. Her topic is “Recognizing Emergency Meteorological Signs.”
Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center’s M.J. Maruca, animal control supervisor, will present “How to Help our Furry Friends During an Emergency.”
South Bay Hospital’s topic is “Special Attention to the Food We Eat During a Crisis,” presented by Katherine Watts, RDN, LDN, patient services/dietitian.
The Sun City Center EMS community relations director, Robin Watt, will present “Fall Prevention.”
Sharon Dimezza, instructor for Silver Sneakers, will give “Tips on Keeping Physically and Mentally Active During a Crisis.”
National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will present “NOAA Weather Reconnaissance: Into The Eye of a Hurricane,” by Michael Holmes, flight director at NOAA’s Aircraft Operations Center.
Home Depot will have a display table with the “Go To” box of suggested household supplies and emergency items found at the local retailer.
