Mary Katherine “Kathy” Carvalho
Kathy Carvalho, 75, formerly of Glen Burnie, Md., passed away November 20, 2014, in Sun City Center, Florida.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m., with Father Tony Giannamore officiating.
Kathy was born in Cambridge, Md., to Grafton and Theresa Asplen on May, 22, 1939. She attended Cambridge High School and graduated in 1957. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1961 from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore. Kathy was elected by her Notre Dame classmates to act as leader for the Sing Song Competition, where her originally composed music was performed. After college, Kathy taught music in the Baltimore City Public School system.
Kathy married fellow teacher Lou Carvalho in 1965 and became a stay-at-home mom after their children were born. She continued to share her love of music by offering private piano lessons to students in her home until she suffered a stroke that left her with aphasia and partial paralysis at the young age of 32. She was determined not to let her disabilities limit her and she accomplished far more than the physician’s initial prognosis. She became a talented quilter and eventually regained her driver’s license. She attended daily Mass at our Lady of Guadalupe and found great comfort in her faith in Jesus Christ.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Grafton and Theresa Asplen; and her devoted husband of 45 years, Manuel Louis “Lou” Carvalho.
Kathy is survived by her brother Fred Asplen of Berea, Ky.; daughter Mary Louise ”Marylou” (Carvalho) Eastin of Gambrills, Md.; son Louis Anthony “Tony” Carvalho of Westminster, Md.; and grandchildren Tyler Starlings (19), Weston Carvalho (19), Julia Carvalho (14) and Nathan Carvalho (9).
The family wishes to express their eternal gratitude to Don and Marlene Frederick for everything they have done for Kathy, the specifics of which are far too numerous to mention. The family also extends their appreciation to the entire staff, fellow residents and friends at The Inn at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Our Lady of Guadalupe, 16650 U.S. 301, Wimauma, FL 33598 or C.A.R.E., 1528 27th St. S.E., Ruskin, Florida 33570.
