Marjorie Ruth Edwards
Marjorie Ruth Edwards, 93, of Sun City Center, Fla., slipped away peacefully on June 1, 2014. Born on November 28, 1920, in Kokomo, Ind., she was the only child of Bessie and Paul McCoy.
In her early life, the family moved to the northern part of Detroit, Mich. Marge graduated from Northern High School and proceeded to the University of Michigan and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. It was during her college years that she met the love of her life, Eugene Edwards, who was also attending the U. of M. With World War II in progress, Gene entered the Army. They were married in Baltimore before Gene went overseas. After graduating from the U. of M., Marge became a high-school teacher. Upon Gene’s return, they settled in Lansing, Mich., and started their family. They had two sons, Donald and Richard. She continued teaching high school while Gene became a highly successful sales representative. Several years after Don was born, Marge became interested in becoming a high-school counselor. She earned her graduate degree in counseling from Michigan State University and worked at Lansing Everett High School.
During her 26 years of retirement in Sun City Center, Marge was very active in many organizations. She accompanied Gene to both his Shrine events as well as the Scottish Rite occasions. Until five years ago she was actively involved in playing golf and bridge with close friends, and she still attended Shrine and Scottish Rite occasions as well as Panhellenic, and the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, and the Order of the Eastern Star until her passing.
Marge will be remembered and cherished for the sweet, encouraging and positive demeanor she always exhibited. She was a loving and devoted wife, an amazing and loving mother, and a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother. Marge was preceded in death in 2008 by her husband of more than 60 years, Gene, and her younger son Rick, who was 58. She was a trusted friend to many and enjoyed all her friends from Redeemer Lutheran church, her Sun City Center community and the local neighborhood.
Marge is survived by her oldest son Don, of Sun City Center; daughter-in-law Jean Edwards of Zachary, La.; grandchildren Scott, Mark, Laurie (Garrett) and Katie (Adam); and great-grandchildren Grant and Mary Katherine.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 701 Valley Forge Blvd., Sun City Center 33573. In lieu of flowers, any memorial remembrance may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
