Virginia (Jean) R. Pence
July 12, 1913 – September 18, 2013
Jean was lovingly called by the Lord and given His peace following a stroke at home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, and survived by her daughter Marjorie Tuinstra, son Bob Pence, brother Bill Cottrell, five grandchildren, and five great-grand-children.
She was born in Chicago to Sophie and William Cottrell, grew up in Lisle and Hinsdale, Illinois, and later moved to Florida for retirement. After eventually settling in Sun City Center, she was able to enjoy regular golfing and travel throughout much of the world with her husband.
Her brilliant mind and the pursuit of ever-increasing knowledge gained her the award of salutatorian when graduating Hinsdale High School in 1943. Gregg Business College then led her into work at the New York Central Railroad and the National Safety Council.
Along with the years of family-raising, she operated her own successful real estate company in LaGrange, Illinois for 24 years, assisted by her husband.
Jean’s great abilities were showcased in publications for several years of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and Who’s Who in The Midwest.
Genealogy also fascinated her, and she traveled throughout this country in search of all the intimate details of her ancestors. A giant volume containing her work was published and given to the Library of Congress, as well as many local libraries where many past relatives had lived. It was found that one early Cottrell ancestor immigrated before the Revolution, so Jean became a member of the DAR.
In later years, a number of the mystery and science fiction stories she wrote were published in various magazines. They often used personal events from her life cleverly woven into the adventures.
The family would like to thank all the dear friends who gave support to her during the past months, especially Pastor Mark and Dee Salmon, and her dedicated care-givers.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on October 19, 2013 at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center.
It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations to individual charities be offered.

Always lovely, Jay Hee later became a natural Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant. She loved helping other women to feel beautiful and look their best. In her final few years, Jay Hee made her home in Sun City Center, Florida in the Kings Point community. Jay Hee loved her years at Kings Point.
