SUN CITY CENTER — The expression “point-and-shoot” doesn’t always refer to cameras.
Some people like the idea of target shooting for sport, with pistols, rifles and arrows.
Other do it to keep their skills sharp or to prepare for hunting trips while some just do it for the camaraderie on the range.
One eclectic group is found at the Kings Point Sportsman’s Club. Although the name has “Kings Point” in it (which is a development within Sun City Center) all residents of Sun City Center who are members of their respective Community Associations may also join.
Founded three years ago, the group already has 180 members, both men and women, said the club’s secretary John Barry.
Barry started shooting a bow and arrow when he was about 10. He says it was a hand-me-down from an older brother who was no longer interested in the sport.
But Barry’s shooting experience didn’t end there. Now a retired New York City police officer, he says he shoots pistols to maintain his skills. “Maintaining life-long skills as you age is very important,” he said.
And then of course, there’s always the fun of learning new ones.
Sportsman’s Club President Les Raba doesn’t shoot bow and arrows. He only shoots pistols.
Born in Hungary, Raba came to America in the mid 1950s and lived in New Jersey.
He began spending part of each year in Florida in 1992 and moved here full time in 1997.
