RIVERVIEW – Lightning began to flash just as J. Vince Thompson Stadium at Riverview High School was beginning to fill with football fans set to watch one of South Hillsborough’s biggest rivalries: the Sharks taking on the East Bay Indians. To add to the night, it was also Riverview’s Homecoming game. Soon after the first flashes from the sky, the stadium was ordered cleared and, just as most people made it to their cars, torrents of rain came down putting the game into question. An hour past the scheduled start, however, East Bay kicked off. The rain did cause the cancellation of some half-time Homecoming festivities.
Despite it being the Sharks’ Homecoming, it was East Bay’s night as the Indians largely shut down the normally successful Sharks ground game and managed to capitalize on turnovers. After a scoreless first quarter, the Indians scored twice before the half, the second touchdown came with less than one second on the clock. When the clock ran out on the second half, it was East Bay 33, Riverview 14. Both quarterbacks, Riverview’s Chase Freeman and East Bay’s Chris Carpentier, reached the end zone twice. East Bay running backs Brandon Byrd scored on a seven-yard run and Chris Greene scored on a 54-yard run. East Bay was the only South County team to rack up a win last week. The Indians and Sharks are now both 2-3 for the season.
