A. Katherine Barkley
Katherine Barkley, 95, of Sun City Center, FL passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012. Katherine was born on May 25, 1917, in Kentucky, where she was the youngest of five children of Robert and Bertha Moore. The family moved soon thereafter, to Bethel, Ohio, where she grew up.
In 1937, Katherine married a local boy from nearby New Richmond, Ohio, Forrest “Frosty” Barkley. They were married for 65 years when Frosty passed away at Sun City Center in 2002 at the age of 89. They are survived by their daughter, Martha “Marti” Snider who lives in Lansing, Michigan, with her husband, David Snider.
In 1950, Katherine, Frosty and Marti moved to Miamisburg, Ohio where the family lived until 1975, when Katherine and Frosty retired to Venice, Florida, and finally to Sun City Center, Florida, in 1977, where they enjoyed many happy years playing golf and bridge.
After Frosty passed away, Katherine moved to Homewood Residence until 2006, when it became necessary for her to move to Plaza West Skilled Nursing Facility, in Sun City Center.
A memorial service was held on Monday, July 16, 2012, at Plaza West. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Lifepath Hospice, 3010 Azeele Street, Tampa, FL 33609, or Sun City Center Emergency Squad, 720 Ray Watson Drive, Sun City Center, FL 33573.
Frederick H. Spain
Frederick H. Spain, age 84, born on February 19, 1928 in Manchester, NH, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Frances (Kennedy) Spain. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Goggin and her husband Jim of Naugatuck, CT and his daughter Diane Wagner and her husband Michael of Fairfield, CT. In addition to his daughters and sons-in-law he is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Jimmy, Rachel, Matthew and Brian Goggin of Naugatuck and Lauren, Mike and Cara Wagner of Fairfield; his brother Harry Spain and his wife Cindy of Belmont, NH; his sister Nancy Lynch of Manchester, NH; several nieces and nephews and many treasured friends. He was predeceased by his infant son Frederick Jr.; his parents Walter and Lillian (Erickson) Spain, and his brother Walter Spain Jr. of Manchester, NH. Born and raised in Manchester, NH, he graduated from St. Joseph’s High School – Class of 1946. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the US Army from 1948-1953. Upon moving to Connecticut he managed the former Lincoln Dairy on Silver Lane, East Hartford. Subsequent to that he worked for US Postal Service, retiring in 1989. Upon his retirement he obtained his counseling degree and worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at Blue Ridge Treatment Center in Bloomfield, CT. After his retirement he was busy with many fulfilling volunteer positions and part-time jobs, while also enjoying the many activities of his grandchildren. Fred also enjoyed a few years of Florida retirement at Kings Point, Sun City Center, FL. Funeral services will be Friday, 1130 a.m. from the Giuliano-Sagarino Funeral Home at Brooklawn 511 Brook Street Rocky Hill followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Elizabeth Seton Church at noon. Interment follow in St Mary’s Cemetery, East Hartford. Friends are invite to the funeral home Friday from 10:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m.
