Howard Demask of Apollo Beach gathered with a few dozen of his closest friends at the Ruskin Senior Activities Center to celebrate his 100th birthday on Thursday. He won’t actually become a centenarian until his birthday on May 28 but since many of his friends will soon return to their northern homes, the party was held early. Demask retired to Apollo Beach 37 years ago from Ohio. In the year of his birth, the Indianapolis 500 ran for the first time, the Philadelphia Athletics, behind 12 games when Howard was born would go on to win the World Series, Marie Curie would win her second Nobel Prize, and both the National Hockey League and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra were formed. Pictured at left, Demask gets a birthday kiss from his wife, Louise.
