KELLY, David E.
David E. Kelly of Sun City Center, FL died peacefully December 13, 2010 under the care of Lifepath Hospice and surrounded by loved ones.
Dave was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, the only son of Paul and Marion Kelly. He graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore, Maryland and received a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
Dave was retired from a 34 year career at 3M Company having worked in Cottage Grove and St. Paul, MN as well as Prairie du Chien, WI.
Dave is dearly loved by his family and friends who will miss his spirited sense of humor and true appreciation of everyone he met. His very full retirement life included the love of good food, good company, gardening, golf, tennis, hunting and fishing. Through his volunteer work in the Southeastern Guide Dog program, Dave showed incredible love and dedication for the past 15 years, especially in his passion for puppy raising. In recent years Dave was an active Hospice volunteer and therapy dog handler. Dave was also an active participant and leader in the Beginning Experience program, supporting widowed, divorced and separated people.
He leaves his beloved Kathy Gauthier; his four children: Sean Kelly and wife Janie of Climax, Michigan; David S. Kelly of Denver, Colorado; Brenda Rudan and husband Michael of Ithaca, New York; and Bryan Kelly and wife Angelica of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren: Ryan, Tara, Sean Patrick, Megan, James, William, Christopher, Paul and Tabatha and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves sisters Carolyn Harding, Nora DeJohn, Nancy Perelman and Kathy Kelly.
Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City Center, Fl at 11am on Friday, January 7, 2011. The family will receive friends on Thursday January 6, 2011 from 4pm to 7pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Conesa Parish Center.

OWENS, Richard E.
Richard E. Owens, 82, of Sun City Center, FL passed into spirit on December 14, 2010. Born on December 15, 1927 in Ilion, NY, Richard was the son of the late William and Dorothy Parry Owens. After graduating from Ilion High School in 1946, he attended college at Mohawk Valley Community College until he entered the United States Navy in 1948. He served in Navy Aviation from 1948-1952, of which the last two years were during the Korean War. United in marriage with Margaret Louise Younglove on November 23, 1957, they recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Richard worked for General Electric Aerospace in Utica, NY, for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed upstate NY, living in New Hartford, NY for 36 years and spending time at the family camp on Kayuta Lake in Remsen, NY, before moving to Sun City Center, FL in 1993. For recreation, bowling, golfing, and playing cards brought him much pleasure and he was a member of the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club for many years.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Louise Owens, Sun City Center, FL; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deborah Owens, Westmoreland, NY; one daughter, Cynthia Owens, Hermitage, TN; one brother, William Owens, Ilion, NY; and three grandchildren Bryan, Trevor and Danielle Owens.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. He had a great love for animals and enjoyed visiting the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, FL, supporting them yearly. Those wishing may donate to the Center for Great Apes in Richard’s memory, www.centerforgreatapes.org.

PALMER, Dawn Wick
Dawn Wick Palmer of Sun City Center, beloved wife of Harry Palmer, passed away December 14, 2010. She was born in Pipestone, Minnesota to George and Ella Wick.
When she was a baby, band leader Lawrence Welk held her in his arms at a hometown concert. In her teens she learned to hunt pheasant and fish for walleye in northern Minnesota. She was raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she was an accomplished seamstress and concert pianist. Upon graduating from Augustana College with a BA in music she went on to become a stewardess at United Airlines. Later in life she earned her Masters Degree in Library Science from Rutgers University and worked as a children’s librarian for West Orange Public Library in West Orange, New Jersey. Later in her career she was a library consultant with Pro Libra Associates in Maplewood, New Jersey.
Dawn was married to the love of her life, Harry Palmer, for 31 years. They enjoyed their home in Verona, New Jersey and especially the time they spent at their vacation home in Callicoon, New York. They shared the love of pets, art, music and travel.
Dawn is survived by her loving husband, Harry Palmer of Sun City Center, her four children, Amy Coffman, Karin Nazaruk, Craig Coffman, Jim Coffman, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and her beloved dog Molly.
Visitation hours were held 2:00-4:00 PM, December 18 at Sun City Center Funeral Home, 1851 Rickenbacker Drive, Sun City Center, Florida. There was a service for friends and family at 2:30 PM, December 19 at Hillsboro Memorial Gardens in the mausoleum chapel, 2323 West Brandon Blvd., Brandon, Florida.
LANGE, Phil C.
Phil C. Lange, Ph.D, 96, of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Tenafly, NJ, died December 13, 2010. He was a retired Columbia University Professor listed both in Who’s Who In America and The World. He is survived by his daughter, DenaRae and husband Robert Kelly, grandsons Brandon and Justin Kelly formerly of Oradell, NJ. He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Oyen) and son, Richard.
Born in North Freedom, WI, to the Shimmick family, he was later adopted by Richard and Martha Lange. Excelling in education Phil earned his Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degrees by the age of 23 and became Chairman of the English Dept. at Wayland Jr. College in Beaver Dam, WI. In 1941, he was Chairman of both Education and Psychology Departments of Arizona State College at Flagstaff; and in 1942 took the same titles at State University of New York at Fredonia. From 1943-46, he was a Training Officer for the United States Navy. In 1950 he accepted the professorship at Columbia University Teachers College until he retired in 1979. While at Columbia he was head of Child Psychology and Educational Technology, consultant for SRA Reading, Sesame Street and Xerography. Dr. Lange was a consultant expert for State Dept. UNESCO, AID, 1948 Korea, 1958-59 Chile, 1970 India, Pakistan, 1972-74 Afghanistan. He was an author, editor of curriculum materials and received the following awards: Filmstrip award Graphic Arts 1966; Communication award National Society of Programmed Instruction 1968; Award Educational Press Assn. Am. 1969.
In 1976 Phil and Irene retired to Sun City Center, Florida. He joined the community Historical Society and collected and indexed early documents and reports of the community’s development thereby becoming the community historian. He was elected to the board of the Sun City Center Civic Association, advanced to Second Vice President in 1986 and was responsible for public relations for the new Community Association. In 1988, Phil introduced an educational and awareness program called “Issues and Ideas” with over 900 programs from 1988 to 2007 with Phil hosting all but two. He was named Man of the Year by the Community Association in 1989 and a “Phil Lange Day” was proclaimed in 2001 for his many contributions to the community. Because of his warm generous nature, constant sense of humor and love of fishing, he will be missed by many.
