This week in The Observer News transcript:
Hello and welcome to the Observer News. I’m Julie Ball.
A plan to develop a narrow strip of land along the Little Manatee River in Ruskin has resurfaced. Last year, the Board of County Commissioners denied the application for six of eight homes at Mill Bayou. The developer, Little Manatee River Reserve is now countering that the board did not have the authority to deny the project. The Sierra Club of Tampa Bay has come out against the project and is urging those interested to attend a public hearing at County Center in Tampa on June 8 at 9 a.m.
Sun City Center stood up for the fallen on Memorial Day on Monday. Before a standing room only audience at Kings Point, 179 names of veterans who have passed since last year were read. Colonel James Shumway, Director of the office of the Chief of Engineers at the Pentagon, was the featured speaker. The complete story and photos are available in this week’s paper.
Also this week, Melody Jameson introduces us to a master glass artisan in Gibsonton who pursues his craft with old world devotion. Sloan uses his unique skills not only to create, but also to restore stained glass art from the century passed. Read more about him only in the Observer News and Riverview Current.
In Observations this week, Mitch Traphagen reminisces about the meaning of the Gulf of Mexico before the oil spill.
In Observing the Web, technology gives us the chance to check out ships coming into Tampa Bay from the comfort of our homes — and also get a real-time look at the activity around the Gulf oil spill thanks to a vessel tracking web site. And a web site named in honor of a teenage coal miner from a century ago opens a high resolution window to the past.
The economic slowdown has put European travel on the back burner for many Americans. Fortunately, fantastic vacation opportunities are available right near our backyards. This week, writer Warren Resen takes us to St. Simons Island, Georgia. It may be a relatively short drive from Tampa Bay but it is a world away. Pick up this week’s paper to find out more.
For the best in features, community events and local news, pick up the Observer News, the SCC Observer or the Riverview Current anywhere in South Hillsborough. Thank you for joining me — I’ll see you next week.
